Iran’s petrochemical industry had attracted $91.6 billion in investment by the end of the last Iranian year (ending late March 2026), while producing more than 75 million metric tons of products worth over $22 billion, according to Omid Shakeri, CEO of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC).
According to the NIPNA, Shakeri said the industry had an installed annual production capacity of more than 101 million metric tons in last Iranian year. Of its total output value, $12 billion came from exports, while more than $10 billion worth of products were sold domestically.
He noted that the petrochemical sector accounted for less than 10% of Iran’s gas consumption in the year but generated approximately $22 billion in value added, highlighting its role in reducing raw-material exports and generating foreign currency revenue.
The NPC chief said winter feedstock shortages remained a challenge and stressed the need for petrochemical companies to invest in upstream development to secure sustainable supplies. The industry is also pursuing projects to collect associated gas that would otherwise be flared.
He added: “Under Iran’s Seventh Development Plan, the industry’s installed annual capacity is expected to reach approximately 111 million metric tons, representing an increase of around 15 million tons from the beginning of the plan.”
Regarding damage sustained during the war, Shakeri said reconstruction of affected petrochemical facilities was progressing, with 60% of lost production capacity having returned to operation.
