Kazem Jalali, Iran’s ambassador to Moscow said intensive negotiations between Iran’s Oil Ministry and Russia’s Gazprom have been underway since the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding in July 2024, IRNA reported.
The two sides have agreed that the gas will be transported through an overland pipeline via Azerbaijan, with an initial capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year, equivalent to around 150 million cubic meters per day, Jalali said.
He added that most issues have been resolved and only “one or two” matters remain to be settled by Russia. Iranian officials have held meetings with Gazprom to address the remaining issues.
Jalali said no precise timeline can yet be given for implementation because the project depends on finalizing the agreement as well as resolving technical and contractual issues. He added that President Masoud Pezeshkian is personally following up on the project, while Iran’s Oil Ministry is also working to finalize the arrangements.
