Turkey and Iraq are seeking to conclude a comprehensive energy cooperation agreement after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi in Ankara.
The two sides did not sign an expected extension of the Kirkuk–Ceyhan crude oil pipeline agreement, which officially expired on Monday. Instead, Erdoğan said both countries aim to finalize a broader energy partnership that will benefit both sides.
Turkey also announced that its state-owned energy company TPAO has acquired a 15% stake in BP Energy Company of Kirkuk Limited (BPECKL), giving it a role in developing the Kirkuk oil field, which is estimated to hold around 3 billion barrels of reserves. BP confirmed the agreement and welcomed TPAO as a partner.
