Iran is seeking to fast-track solar energy development to address severe electricity shortages caused by aging infrastructure, chronic under-investment, and years of U.S. sanctions.

According to the latest reports from SATBA and the Ministry of Energy, Iran’s total installed renewable energy capacity as of late November 2025 reaches about 2,720 MW, with solar consistently holding the largest share — roughly two-thirds of the total.

The government aims to reach 12 GW of renewable energy capacity within the next three years, up from about 2.5 GW currently (around 2.5% of total electricity generation).
