Japan is assisting Iranian efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by sharing its expertise to help the country in drawing up a reduction goal.

Iran is one of the few nations that have yet to establish a reduction target under the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.
About 70 people, including Iranian officials in charge of climate change policy, attended a two-day seminar this week in the capital, Tehran. It was organized in cooperation with the Japanese government.

The participants studied the various ways to cut emissions. One is by making power generation and transmission more efficient, another is by using hydrogen and ammonia that do not emit carbon dioxide when they are burned. The use of gas created during the process of refining petroleum is also a way to reduce emissions.

An official of Iran's Department of Environment said it is beneficial to learn from a country like Japan. The official expressed hopes the seminar will help Iran set the reduction goal.

Watanabe Masashi from Japan's Agency for Natural Resources and Energy served as an instructor at the seminar. He said his agency intends to help Iran to submit its reduction plan by sharing Japan's experiences.
